Let’s be honest: nothing compares to a crisp cotton saree at Pujo. The starched pleats, the red & white laal paar, the way it hugs the body, it’s all part of the festival itself. But Pujo is also five long days of walking, queueing, standing through aarti and hopping between pandals until 2am(5 am for some), often in eastern humidity. If you want to wear something different this year, or you’ve never felt fully comfortable managing six yards through a crowd, you have options that still feel unmistakably festive.

1. The pre-draped saree The saree look without the saree effort. The pleats and pallu are stitched in place, so it goes on in minutes and stays put all night — no re-pinning in a pandal queue, no pallu slipping when someone jostles past. Bag: A small potli, held rather than slung, so it doesn’t catch the pallu.

2. The Anarkali The flare gives you the drama of a saree with the ease of a dress. Jewellery: One statement piece — either a heavy necklace or large earrings, not both. The flare and the dupatta already do a lot.

3. The skirt set The most contemporary of the four, and a quietly clever choice. 4. The short kurti with jeans For the days you want to be festive but genuinely comfortable, a morning pandal visit, a quick trip to see the idols, or an evening that’s more adda than dressing up. Pandal-hopping essentials, whatever you wear

Choose your footwear first. It decides whether the night ends at 11pm or 2am. Break in new shoes before Pujo, not during it.

Plan for humidity. Breathable fabrics — cotton, cotton-silk, chanderi, rayon — will feel very different at midnight than heavy georgette or satin.

Keep your hands free. Between prasad, photos and crowds, a crossbody bag beats a clutch every time.

Pack a small kit: safety pins, a hand fan, tissues, a spare hair tie and a power bank.
